The Shelby County Schools
Education Foundation Race for Education is
now the second largest Memphis Race Track Club-sanctioned run each year in
Western Tennessee. As a family-oriented 5k
"fun/run," it attracts both serious runners who are timed using electronic
chips and persons of all ages who just want to run (or most frequently walk)
the course and have a pleasant day's outing.
The Race for Education
began in 2001
as the brainchild of
several district parents who were alarmed by drastic cuts in funding for
Shelby County Schools' programs in art, music and physical education. Thus,
proceeds from the race are used to provide small grants for such programs in
each of the district's schools. Since 2001 more than $400,000 has been
raised by the race and returned to the schools. Thanks to all for your generous support.
This year's event held at Freeman Park in
Bartlett TN on November 4, 2012 resulted in over $14,000 is grants going
back to Shelby County Schools supporting their Art, Music, PE and other
special programs.
